Institutional description

University of Madras is a public state university and is one of the oldest universities in India. It has six campuses in the city. At present, there are 233 plus courses offered under 87 academic departments grouped under 19 schools, covering diverse areas such as sciences, social sciences, humanities, management and medicine along with 109 affiliated colleges and 52 approved research institutions. It is one of the top Universities in India that provide distance education in various disciplines. The University imparts both Under Graduate and Post Graduate Education through the Affiliated Institutions which are spread over the districts of Chennai, Thiruvallur and Kancheepuram. Apart from teaching, research activities in Arts, Humanities, Science, Management and Technology shpae the academic tenor of the University. A number of institutions affiliated to Madras University concentrate on research activities offering Ph.D., Programmes in their respective field of specialisation. The University also offers teaching and research programmes in its four campuses. The 68 University Departments of study and research are spread over four campuses organised into 18 Schools each of which offer Post Graduate Courses in respective specialisation, part time and full time Ph.D. Programmes, Diploma and Certificate Programmes. It also assessing the need for educating a large number of people in the country, the University offers both Under Graduate and Post Graduate programmes through the Institute of Distance Education. The Department of Anthropology offering two-year M.A., M.Phil and Ph.D. programmes. One of the strengths of the Department has been the emphasis on fieldwork. The number of sponsored research projects completed in the Department is remarkable both in terms of diversity of areas researched as well as the sheer number of projects completed with funding from both national and international agencies. Also, the faculty have been consultants to various national and international bodies. The department anthropology is one were working very closely with the policy makers more specifically on community development, identification, education, health, livelihood and so on. It also taken up many governmental projects and the basic objectives were documenting the ethnographic profiles of the communities like Scheduled Caste (SC)/ Scheduled Tribe (ST), Baseline survey, Need assessment study, Impact assessment and Feasibility studies.

Institutional description

Indian Institute of Information Technology Kottayam is a premiere institute under the Government of India with the primary focus on Information Technology. The institute offers Undergraduate and PhD programs in various specializations of Computer Science. The institute has varied research groups namely IOT and cloud computing, Data Science, and Digital Forensics. The research groups work on multidisciplinary projects with the goal of utilizing information technology for societal benefit. IIIT Kottayam is designed in order to impart an entrepreneurial ecosystem in the campus. The institute has an Atal Incubation Centre to encourage start-ups and entrepreneurs to come up with socially useful products. The centre encourages multi-disciplinary projects in collaboration with other premiere institutes and leading industries. IIIT Kottayam has already established MoU with some leading industrial/academic institutions in order to ensure placements or organize knowledge transfer programs – MoUs with Government of India, Government of Kerala, Rolta, and CIAL have manifested the organization of knowledge transfer program. In addition, the institute has signed MoUs with leading Universities such as Technical University Munich Germany in order to conduct HPC/Cloud specific joint research and to organize student exchange programs. IIIT Kottayam has been working on the field of Artificial Intelligence for different projects in varied domains such as agriculture, pollution, disaster management etc. The institute has been awarded a grant by Microsoft AI for Earth for pursuing an AI project in agriculture.
